Fighting in hockey...sure, why not?
An article in the Star (http://www.thestar.com/News/article/199587) suggests that most hockey fans support fighting. Not surprising. What was interesting were the other aspects of the poll:
"The poll also found that:
– Supporters of the Conservative party were nine percentage points more likely to support fighting than Liberals.
– Francophones were eight per cent more supportive of a fighting ban than anglophones.
– Younger people (aged 18 to 24) say they enjoy fighting 15 percentage points more than people aged over 55.
– Men are 15 per cent more likely than women to oppose a ban.
– Alberta is the province most opposed to a ban.
The Decima poll of 1,000 Canadians was conducted between March 30 and April 2, and has a 3.1 per cent margin of error."
Just putting it out there...

General thought, fighting is sure entertaining for the audience don't get me wrong. I love it as well, but in a sport where the goal is to play as a team and win. Fighting just proves unsportsmanship. "We can't beat the other team so lets start fighting" or "He's pissing me off I'm going to smash his face!". That is just purely bull. I find they should take it out completely. The best team who wins the Stanley cup is the team who plays best as a team and want to win, not who are the best fighters.
On another note, the two guys throwing fists at each other is dangerous. One player's career can end very quickly if a shot is lethal enough to the temple it can cause major brain damage, which also affects your nerves which affects your reaction time which also affects your muscles movement.
Oh you might think, bah they are tough they can get up after fights, ya... They get up... the day after they feel it.
I've boxed in my life and I've taken shots to the head and to the body. Sure we have padded gloves, but when you take the shots it hurts up until a certain point. The day after you feel bad. Real bad. So imagine bone on bone. The fighting in hockey is more of a cause of hate and disgust rather than respect like in boxing. In boxing they respect each other and they shake hands after leaving while in hockey they just turn backs to each other and when they meet again guesse what? "REVENGE!".
In boxing as well, it is the coach's responsibility to ensure the boxer does not suffer too much damage or is in a dangerous situation, if that is the case he throws in the towel and the fight stops. In hockey, if one is in a dangerous situation with all the fans screaming they just go until one can almost die.
My conclusion, I don't support it and they should take it out. Body check injuries are enough damage to the players.
Its a "Useless Entertainment"
